Sarah MacKeigan, Stepping Up on Sep 05

An app that focuses on making physical activity the easy choice for residents, at home, school, work or play. Information would be readily available on unstructured, low cost/no cost opportunities for individuals and families to be active. It would connect users to initiatives in HRM for hiking, biking, walking, and active play (www.halifax.ca/trails/, (www.halifax.ca/rec/Fields www.walkaboutns.ca). Facility schedules, bookings, rec leagueleagues, and field conditions (www.halifax.ca/rec/field_conditions.asp) would be available. Users can register for HRM programs easily using RecConnect (https://eservices2.halifax.ca/recconnect/Start/Start.asp?SCheck=733445062&SDT=39857.4062962963). There is an option for persons with special needs to gather information to attend recreation activities compatible with their interests/abilities i.e. The Play Book (www.halifax.ca/rec/Inclusion.html) info. Those requiring financial help could find info on HRM’s Jumpstart RecKids Program (www.halifax.ca/rec/JumpstartRecKids.html) The app would encourage smart commuting to work and for leisure. Bike lanes and safe roads for cycling would be mapped using the HRM Bike Map (www.halifax.ca/cycling/BikeMap2012.html) and SmartTrip (www.halifax.ca/smarttrip/). Transit schedules would be available so people could identify the quickest route. The app would use GPS giving time and distance to commute by foot, bike, transit and last, car. The app would enable users to learn about active community events (www.halifax.ca/events/, www.steppinguphalifax.ca/news/featured-events). The app would include tips for increasing daily physical activity (www.steppinguphalifax.ca/resources, (www.participaction.com/get-moving/bring-back-play/) The app would provide physical activity suggestions using specific criteria (resources, time, location, type of activity, equipment, and interests), The app option would include: -Smart Commuting -Places to Play -Hiking, Biking, and Walking -Inclusion Opportunities -Events -RecConnect -Facilities and Fields -Tips and Suggestions This app would use all available information to encourage HRM residents to make active lifestyle choices in their day to day living, for themselves and their families.
